WEIGHTLIFTING
14/03/2006 13:07 - (SA)
Melbourne - In Manchester four years ago, two Indian lifters tested positive and the country has been hit with more shame on the eve of Melbourne with another top-level doping infringement.
The Indians, who won four golds in the women's event in Manchester, were banned from competing in international meets for one year by the world body in 2004 after three female weightlifters - Kunjurani Devi, Pratima Kumari and Sanamacha Chanu - tested positive at the Athens Olympics.
Devi and Rai have both been included in India's 14-member weightlifting squad for Melbourne.
There will be fewer medals awarded in 2006.
In previous tournaments, separate golds were awarded for clean and jerk, snatch and overall; this time, it will be one gold for each division.
Fifteen weightlifting golds will be staged in Melbourne with eight for men and seven for women.
