Melbourne - The triathlon at the Commonwealth Games promises to be one of the closest fought events in Melbourne with the Australians aiming to clinch their first triathlon golds at a major games from a host of New Zealanders and Britons.
Favourites among the men include the current New Zealand No 1 Bevan Docherty, a silver medallist in the Athens Olympics in 2004 and fellow Kiwi Kris Gemmell, who is ranked eighth in the world.
And one person who cannot be ruled out is Docherty and Gemmell's teammate Hamish Carter, the Athens gold medallist.
In the women's event, Australia have a strong medal contender in current world No 1 Annabel Luxford, the reigning world silver medallist who won the first ITU World Cup of the 2006 season.
South Africa will have two male and two female competitors at this year's Games.
