Melbourne - Australia's Mathew Hayman won the gold medal in the men's 165 km road race at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday.
The 27-year-old upstaged the big race favourites to win over the 15-lap course at Melbourne's Royal Botanical Gardens in four hours, 5.09 minutes. South Africa's David George won the silver medal with Aussie Allan Davis, the Tour de France rider who was heavily fancied to take gold, back in third place.
Steve Cummings, a member of England's team pursuit winning gold medallists, finished fourth. The victory completed an Australian double in the road races on the final day of Games action after Natalie Bates had claimed gold in the women's 100km race earlier in the day.
Hayman's was Australia's 11th track and road cycling gold of the Games.
