Washington - Ernst van Dyk, Special Olympics athlete from Paarl, was still a bit sore earlier this week after winning the wheelchair category in the Boston Marathon at the weekend for a fourth time and setting a new world record in the process.
Van Dyk said he was "feeling well", despite having struggled a bit in the dry, hot and windy conditions in which the race took place.
He bettered the previous record by more than two minutes, recording a new world best time of 1:18:27 over the 42.2km.
"I believe Boston is my lucky city," said Van Dyk, who also had the privilege of pitching the first ball in the baseball clash between the New York Yankees and the Red Sox of Boston on Sunday.
The home team won the three-match series 2-1. "It was exciting in the (Fenwick) stadium, but it's not Newlands," joked Van Dyk.
He will be a busy man during the next three weeks, making appearances in marathons in Cleveland, Washington and Michigan before returning home again.
