Mbeki: Come home as champ
22/04/2004 17:38 - (SA)
Cape Town - President Thabo Mbeki sent a message of support to heavyweight boxer Corrie Sanders as he prepares for his WBC title fight against Vitali Klitschko on Sunday morning South African time.
Fresh from victory at the polls, President Thabo Mbeki urged the 37-year-old boxer to come home as "champion of the world" in a message on Thursday.
"As one of our outstanding ambassadors in the boxing fraternity, we are confident that you will bring pride to the South African flag and glory to our wonderful country at a time that we are celebrating a decade of freedom," Mbeki said.
Mbeki said sport was an important nation-builder and that Sanders' contribution in "the boxing rings of the world is a further building block in that process".
"We look forward to your home coming as the champion of the world," Mbeki said.
A win will see the left-handed Pretoria boxer become the first local heavyweight ever to win the lucrative WBC heavyweight belt.
