Dragila misses record books
09/06/2004 13:40 - (SA)
Paris - Olympic champion Stacy Dragila has been denied a world record in the women's pole vault by a recently-introduced rule.
The 33-year-old American vaulted 4.83m in Ostrava in the Czech Republic on Tuesday to beat the previous best of 4.82m which Russian Yelena Isinbayeva set last July.
However, it will not be recognised because of a rule change made by the sport's ruling body the IAAF under which the indoor and outdoor marks are combined.
That means Isinbayeva's 4.86m set at the World Indoor Championships in March stays as the world record.
Dragila's performance counts as an outdoor world best, an IAAF spokesperson said. But she loses $50 000 for a world record.
