07/09/2004 17:33 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Amakrokokroko table tennis star Rosabelle Riese will carry the SA flag and lead the team into the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in Athens on September 17.
Cape Town-based Riese will participate in the class singles; singles open and team table tennis events at the Athens Paralympics.
Riese participated in the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics where she won the bronze medal in Pistol shooting.
She then focused on table tennis and won three gold medals at the All Africa Games in 2003 and two silver medals at the 2003 Africa-Middle East tournament.
"I am honoured and proud to be chosen as the flag bearer for the opening ceremony," said Riese.
"All of the members of the Amakrokokroko are very supportive and equally deserved this opportunity."
Riese was chosen as the official flag bearer after votes were counted on the Amakrokokroko hotline, which will also keep Amakrokokroko fans up-to-date with the latest results and other news from the action in Athens during the Games.
The Paralympic team will have added motivation to strive for greatness at the Paralympic Games from September 17 to 28, with a total of over R1m in cash and kind set to be among the rewards for medals brought home.
Breakdown at completion of Games
Andy Scott, national sponsorship co-coordinator for Disability Sport SA (Dissa), said that while a breakdown of the incentives will be announced upon the completion of the Paralympic Games, it is of great importance to inspire the SA participants even further, to reach for glory in honour of themselves, and the nation they will be representing in Athens.
"In a short time span since SA's readmission to international sport and Paralympic Games debut at Barcelona in 1992, South African sport has carved its name in the world sports history books from a success perspective, and we at Dissa hope that the incentives raised will be seen as further motivation for our SA Paralympic team sports ambassadors to try their very best and put their spirit to the test," said Scott.
