Cape Town - "It is hard work to take part in athletics overseas. It is not a picnic."
So says world high jump champion Hestrie Cloete, who has retired "indefinitely" to start a family.
Cloete declined to talk about her recent miscarriage and personal life, but said: "It was a good year as far as my athletics was concerned."
Cloete won the silver medal in the Athens Olympics. She was beaten into second place by a Russian, Yelena Sesarenko, who recorded a height of 2.06m to Cloete's 2.02m.
The high jump queen held the SA senior title from 1996 to 2004 and was the 2003 International Athletics Federation's woman athlete of the year.
Cloete said: "The time has come for me to do something else. If I feel like it in future, I may participate again."
