Port Elizabeth - Corrie Sanders can recapture the world heavy weight boxing crown, says his new trainer, Louis van Winkel.
Van Winkel was responsible for Sanders' preparations for his fight last week against Alexei Varakin of Russia.
Sanders, who broke his ties with former trainer Harold Volbrecht after his defeat against Vitali Klitschko in March this year, knocked Varakin down in the second round.
"Let's be honest, Varakin was not a wonderful opponent, but I do believe Corrie can become the world champ again. "Many people still doubt his ability, but if he trains for a few months he can reach the top again," Van Winkel said.
The major problem they have, is finding suitable sparring partners for Sanders. For the Varakin fight Van Winkel, who retired from boxing in 1999, had to do the job himself.
He said Sanders weighed in at 107kg against Varakin, but he believes his best weight is about 5kg less.
"His hand speed and his power are awesome. He simply needs to be fit and the results will follow," the trainer said.
