17/08/2005 14:59 - (SA)
Cape Town - Cape Town swimmer Lewis Pugh has arrived on the island of Spitsbergen in preparation for his bid to become the first person to undertake a long-distance swim in the Arctic Ocean.
Pugh, who already holds the world record for the longest cold-water swim, will make his attempt on Friday.
He plans to swim a distance of one kilometre around Verlegenhuken, the northernmost point of Spitsbergen, which is barely 1 000km from the North Pole.
Pugh has been training for the bid, in which the water will be an icy two degrees centigrade, by swimming in water laced with ice cubes in Cape Town.
He will be wearing only a swimming costume and cap.
