Jkarata - The Indonesian leg of A1 Grand Prix has been postponed due to the death of the championship's founder, Dubai ruler Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashed al-Maktoum, the organisers said on Thursday.
"The sudden and unexpected death of the Dubai Emir, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al-Maktoum has prompted the postponement, due to mourning," said a statement posted on the A1 website.
The seventh leg of the A1 Grand Prix series was originally scheduled for January 15 at the Sentul Race Circuit south of Jakarta. No replacement date has been given for the race.
"A1 Grand Prix is working closely with the government of Indonesia who have been most supportive, to identify an appropriate replacement date," the statement said.
Sheikh Maktoum, vice president of the United Arab Emirates, founded A1 Grand Prix in 2004. He died on Wednesday at the age of 62 while on a visit to Australia.
A1 Grand Prix, often shortened to A1GP or simply A1, also known as the World Cup of Motorsport, is an international motor racing series, unique in the field of motorsport in that drivers complete for their country instead of a private team or constructor.
