  • Zouerat, Mauritania - American Robby Gordon claimed victory in the sixth stage of the Dakar Rally on Thursday while Carlos Sainz came in fourth to retain his overall lead.

Gordon in a Hummer won his third special stage victory on the Dakar in a time of 2 hours 58 minutes 57 seconds to finish 17 seconds ahead of Frenchman Jean-Louis Schlesser and 6:52 minutes in front of South African Giniel de Villiers.

Sainz in a Volkswagen finished 7:17 minutes behind Gordon on the 394km timed session from Tan Tan to Zouerat, which was 817km in total, but continues to head the 2006 runner-up and VW team-mate De Villiers in the overall standings by 3:11 minutes.

The two-time rally world champion Sainz leads third-placed Carlos Sousa, also in a VW, by 14:03 minutes with 2006 winner Luc Alphand in Mitsubishi fourth overall, nearly 24 minutes adrift.

In the motorbike category, Spaniard Jordi Viladoms finished 57 seconds ahead of defending champion, compatriot and KTM team-mate Marc Coma to seal his first stage victory of this year's Dakar.

American Chris Blais came in third, one minute adrift, with Esteve Pujol fourth, 3:08 minutes behind the winner.

Coma's second-place finish sees him extend his lead over Pujol in the overall standings to 12:07 minutes.

The rally continues on Friday with the seventh stage of the 2007 edition, 580km from Zouerat to Atar, of which 542km form the day's special. The 29th edition of the Dakar rally runs over 15 stages until the January 20 finish in Dakar, Senegal. Sapa-dpa
