Spinal surgery for Klitschko
09/09/2007 22:20 - (SA)
Kiew - Former world heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, who is due to face American fighter Jameel McCline in Munich on September 22, has undergone spinal surgery in an Austrian clinic, a sports source told AFP Sunday.
"The surgery was very serious and took several hours," the source said without elaborating on the boxer's condition.
Klitschko, 36, had suffered a serious spinal trauma years ago, the source recalled but did not clarify if the surgery was in any way connected.
The source also refused to comment on whether Klitschko's fight with McCline would take place as scheduled, saying only that any official commentary on the issue would be released on Monday.
Klitschko, the WBC heavyweight boxing champion in 2004 and 2005, retired two years ago because of a serious knee injury.
But having watched his younger brother Wladimir claim and defend the IBF title in 2006, the Ukrainian decided to make a comeback in January 2007.
