East London - East London's intrepid adventurers, Bill Godfrey and Peter van Kets, have won the pairs division in the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing race from the Canary Islands to Antigua.
Godfrey, 37, and Van Kets, 41, reached the finish at English Harbour on the West Indies island shortly after 05:00 South African time on Tuesday.
According to the Dispatch Online, it took them all of 51 days to complete the 2 552 nautical mile trans-Atlantic crossing in their three-metre boat, the Gquma Challenger.
Foul weather greeted the pair as they neared the Caribbean, delaying their expected arrival on Monday.
In the end, they reached the finish line just 20 nautical miles ahead of their nearest challenger.
