IOC to recognise Kosovo
17/02/2008 21:28 - (SA)
Rome - The International Olympic Committee is set to recognise Kosovo although it's unlikely the world's newest state will be represented at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
"There will be a recognition of Kosovo on the part of the IOC. I can announce this in advance," Mario Pescante, the president of the IOC's commission of international relations told the ANSA news agency.
"But I don't think Kosovo would have the time to be represented at the Olympics in Beijing."
Pescante added that Kosovo has already submitted an application to join the IOC.
Earlier on Sunday, Kosovo's parliament declared the province's independence from Serbia, giving Europe a new nation and marking a historic turning point in the volatile Balkans.
