Stofile praises BSA board
20/02/2008 11:27 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile has applauded the outgoing board of Boxing SA (BSA) for stabilising its administration.
Stofile was reacting to the announcement by BSA chairperson Dali Mpofu that he would step down after the end of term of the board in May.
Mpofu, who led the turbulent BSA into financial and administrative stability, told delegates at the National Boxing Convention in Bloemfontein last weekend that he would not avail himself for re-appointment.
"I have achieved what I set out to achieve and it is now time that I concentrate on my job as group chief executive of SABC," he said.
Mpofu was appointed by Stofile to replace Mthobi Tyamzashe as the chairperson of the new board three years ago.
But amid financial chaos within the BSA which led to the indefinite suspension of general manager Krish Naidoo, Stofile threatened to relieve Mpofu of the chairmanship.
'Finances are in order'
But on Wednesday Stofile said the board under Mpofu's chairmanship had done a good job.
"They ensured that BSA functions as an institution and now the structure has a chief executive officer in Bongani Khumalo and the finances are in order," Stofile said.
Stofile said the new board would be appointed after the present structure had stepped down in May.
He said an advertisement would be placed in national newspapers for people to nominated people they feel should serve in the board.
"People have an opportunity to have a say regarding the composition of the new board by submitting their nominees," he said.
He admitted that Mpofu had not informed him of his decision not to avail himself.
"But I was not expecting him to inform me because the term is ending and the new board members will be nominated," he said.
Stofile's deputy Gert Oosthuizen told the convention that due to BSA's clean audit report, the department would receive R2 million.
"We are pleased by the job the board has done to turn around the image of BSA," Oosthuizen said.
