29/03/2008 20:07 - (SA)
London - Oxford University has beaten defending champion Cambridge to win the 154th annual Boat Race along the River Thames for the third time in four years.
The favoured eight-man Oxford crew broke clear after Cambridge failed to take advantage of the left-hand, mid-race bend and crossed the line at the end of the 6.8-kilometre (4.25-mile) race in 20 minutes, 13 seconds.
Cambridge finished in 21:13 in the slowest race since 1947.
The result cut Cambridge's overall advantage to 79-74.
One race _ in 1877 _ ended in a dead heat.
