6th gold medal for SA
03/05/2008 10:03 - (SA)
Addis Ababa - Janice Josephs, 26-year-old African Games champion, added the 2008 African Championships title to her collection when she won the long jump gold medal after a long drawn-out competition in Addis Ababa on Friday with a fine jump of 6.64.
It was South Africa's sixth gold medal of the Championships - the fifth on the day - and brought the team's total number of medals after the third day to thirteen.
Josephs' distance was a personal disappointment as she was hoping to qualify for Beijing but failed by only 8cm. She could have made it had it not been for the fact that there were 18 competitors that drew out the competition by far too long. She also had a second best jump of 6.61m.
The 6.64m was her best of the year by 1cm.
Chinazom Amade of Nigeria won the silver medal with a jump of 6.31m.
The other SA athletes who won gold medals on the third day were LJ van Zyl, Elizna Naude, Anika Smit, and the SA men's 4x100m relay team.
