Jordy on fire in J-Bay

Jeffreys Bay - South Africa's Jordy Smith advanced to Round 4 of the R2.4m Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay on Wednesday by posting a comfortable victory over 15th seed Dean Morrison (AUS).
The 20 year-old Durbanite in his rookie year on the ASP World Tour used his powerful frame to carve his way across the classic one to two metre waves peeling down the point at Supertubes, punctuating speed lines with vertical manoeuvres and gravity defying floaters.
Waiting patiently for the best waves in the long lulls between sets, Smith opened his account 15 minutes into the 30 minute heat with an excellent 8.17 out of 10 before adding another outstanding 8.0 point ride with five minutes remaining. His heat tally of 16.17 left Morrison needing a combination of rides and eliminated from the event.
"I'm taking a different approach, waiting for the sets and trying to stay calm," Smith said of his strategy against Morrison, who had beaten him in the first event of the year at Morrison's home break of Snapper Rocks in Australia.
The Smith v Morrison encounter drew the biggest webcast audience of any Billabong Pro event in history with more than 20 000 people logged onto the www.billabongpro.com website to watch the action live.
Now into the last 16 in the event, Smith will be up against defending Billabong Pro champion Taj Burrow (AUS) in heat 7 of Round 4 which is expected to take place at around 08:00 on Thursday morning.
It was Burrow who stopped Smith's run in the semi-finals of the 2006 Billabong Pro after the South African had decimated the world's best surfers after gaining entry into his first ASP World Tour event that year as a wildcard.
"I lost to Taj a couple of years ago, so hopefully we get waves and see what happens. I'd love to get him back, but Taj is surfing really, really well," Smith commented on their upcoming Round 4 clash.
