05/09/2008 15:48 - (SA)
Germiston - Roland Schoeman's arrival at the Telkom SA Short Course Championships at the Delville pool in Germiston on Friday promised much in fast times, and the Arizona-based swimmer came to the party in smashing the African 50m butterfly record.
Schoeman's time of 22.74s in the heats saw him dip inside the previous African record mark of 22.84s which had stood behind the name of Lyndon Ferns - Schoeman's teammate in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay golden moment at the Athens Olympics four years ago.
Schoeman's record followed Cameron van der Burgh's African record time of 26.61s set in the 50m breaststroke at the same venue on Thursday.
