Ramaala fails in marathon bid

24/08/2008 05:58 Beijing - South Africa's Hendrick Ramaala on Sunday finished the Olympic marathon in 44th place behind Samuel Wanjiru, who won Kenya's first Olympic gold medal in a time of 2 hours 6 minutes 32 seconds.

Ramaala's time was 2:22:43. His compatriot Norman Dlomo came 53rd in a time of 2:24:28.

The silver medal was won by Morocco's Jaouad Gharib in 2:07:16, followed by bronze medal winner Tsegay Kebede of Ethiopia in 2:10:00.

Other runners from the field of 76 who completed the race were Ethiopia's Deriba Merga in fourth place with 2:10:21, Kenya's Martin Lel in fifth place with 2:10:24 and Mike Fokoroni of Zimbabwe in 11th place with a time of 2:13:17.
