Boks slammed for Soweto snub

25/10/2007 17:13

Johannesburg - The Springboks were accused on Thursday of blowing the chance of spreading rugby among South Africa's black population by scrapping plans to include the biggest township on a World Cup victory parade.

SA Rugby, already under fire over the lack of black players in the Springbok team, said it had to strike Soweto off its list of venues because of time constraints although the team is still scheduled to tour all the major cities.

"Unfortunately, while that was the initial plan, the parade does not include Soweto," SA Rugby media manager Rayaan Adriaanse said.

"It's simply a matter of logistics and time constraints. We would have liked to go to possibly the entire country but with logistics it's just not possible."

The win over England in Saturday's final has renewed debate about the racial make-up of the Boks who included only two players of colour in their starting lineup and the Soweto visit was seen as a significant public relations gesture.

Dali Ndebele, director of the Soweto rugby club, said the Springboks had "missed an opportunity" to promote the game and boost the morale of young black players who had been ecstatic at the team's achievement in France.

Banners ready

"Young kids who play rugby, and even those who don't, were very much looking forward to welcoming and seeing the Springboks in Soweto," Ndebele said.

"Already we had made plans about how we were going to welcome them. Our sponsors had banners ready, songs were composed.

"It's a big disappointment to us, sponsors, the kids, and the community who rallied behind the team. It's a missed opportunity to celebrate with the real masses."

After arriving back home on Tuesday, coach Jake White said the Springboks must learn from the "mistakes" that followed the first World Cup triumph in 1995 which they failed to use as a springboard to make the team more representative of the country's racial mix.

Ran out of drinks

Tsietsi Louw, a lawmaker for the ruling African National Congress, said the decision to drop Soweto from the victory parade typified the "arrogance" of the rugby authorities after black supporters had got behind the team.

"During the finals, the fan parks were filled with black people. Township shebeens (bars) ran out of drinks with blacks supporting their team," he said.

"One would have hoped that with all transformation talk going on, at least the trophy would be taken to the townships for black fans to also join in celebrations.

"It is inexcusable for them to snub them like that... These are the people and children who regard those players as their heroes, irrespective of their colour."

Chichi Maponya, a businesswoman who sponsored a rugby theme park during the tournament said it was "sad and unfortunate" that Soweto was being overlooked.

"Everybody was looking forward to welcoming them. My tenants (at a new shopping mall), and school kids nearby were planning to throw them a huge welcome party.

"We just hope and wish they will learn from their previous mistakes and not lock a black child out of the development of the sport."

Promote the game

While interest in rugby has traditionally been confined to the white minority, the Springbok win was hailed as a chance to broaden its popularity.

Ndebele, whose club was only established in 1998, said: "We are trying to promote the game but they (rugby authorities) don't want to come to the party."

"If they were serious about transforming the game and encouraging blacks to play, they would have thought of starting the parade in a township like Alexandra (north of Johannesburg) and Soweto.

"These are the communities and their kids who never get a chance to see these people play because they cannot afford the tickets to the games. It was a lifetime opportunity for them."

Isn't it time to grow up? I thought we were past all these racial issues... Do you hear other cities / towns complain about the fact that the Boks won't make it to their respective home towns? No! But everytime there is a change to through a racial remark without getting in trouble you tend to do it. Do we complain about not enough whites in the soccer team. No again. This will probably be the last time we win the World Cup as well, cause the team will get chosen on merit less and less. A World Cup event is an event where the BEST sports men and women represent their country. And to come back to the Boks not being able to attend all their venues, give them a break! Do you want them to travel the whole country in 3 days? Didn't think so. And if you are not good enough to represent the Springbok rugby team....then GET OVER IT.!

Why was Soweto dropped? The only reason they don't have time anymore is because they have to drive past Vodaworld, stop off at Sasol and then finish off at Monte Casino (who've no doubt paid for the privelege). Since when have the national team's sponsors been more important than the nation?

With the celebrations and the fresh calls for 'transformation' precariously balanced, the people who made te decision to cancel Sowweto has lost the first round for the Springboks. They will be reminded of this in the bitter battles that are to follow. If a major white area were left out there would have been no damage. Are these decision-makers lemmings or what? Every opportunity to make it a truly nationaal sport must be grabbed!

As a fellow black South African, I have empathy for the youngsters from Soweto. I don't believe, however, that adults should lash out and seize this oppurtunity to express their apathy towards the "authorities". As I was watching the game from my flat in London, dying to have a glipmse as to what the celebrations back in SA must have been like, was an astonishing feeling. If we miss the plot on this one, people might just argue, what about Thokoza etc. places of political significance? Sometimes we as South Africans should pause and for a moment celebrate who we are, what we have achieved and what we are destined for as a nation. Jumping on the band wagon everytime an "oppurtunity is missed" is not good enough if we want our youth to believe in themselves. If it was due to plane arrogance I am all for an apology, but lets us not throw the baby out with the bath water. We are GREATER than that! The mere fact that we won was a massive victory for our country...ask any South African that happened to be out of the country at that moment. Just hearing a person speaking in a SA dialect in a foreign country is enought o make you cry...let alone being World Champs.

Miles says: Administrators aim to please sponsors, not the fans
    25/10/2007 18:05
I was so surprised to see how widespread support was for the final, in particular, amongst non-whites. I am fortunate enough to be able to afford to go to rugby games and see the Boks play, but really, these celebrations should really be taken into Soweto. For the first time ever, rugby is in such a stunning position to TRULY unite black and white, but this cuts off their noses to spite their faces again. This is not a question of 'grow up, they can't be everywhere', comments like that are just stupid. For rugby to take its next step up in SA over the next 10 years, opportunities like this to take the celebration to places like Soweto simply cannot be ignored. I guess we will just put it down to the daft administrators again, who are blinded by their own self-imposed glory and driven by their own incompetance.

Bokke, you have as many fans in Soweto as you have in Pretoria. But Sowetans need your presence more.

Worst of all the Eastern Cape and Limpopo are one the provinces where the development in rugby is at its peak as they're producing players for the currie cup, sevens and super 14 ... stop this whinning about SOWETO they have not yet produced any big player in rugby even at under 19, Limpopo and Eastern Cape shud be the ones whining

They should take international standards to school level and allow these youngsters to experience the joy at their tender ages. After reading 50 comments on this subject, 41 people out of 50 can't be wrong. It's a simple rule in statistics. Emotions aside, Soweto is probably the most represtative sample of the whole black population in SA. Rugby also has a long way to go to demonstrate unity. If someone higher up in the structures failed to see the opportunity, then I wonder if we have competent, global leauge leadership in the sport. Short of plain ignorance, this smacks of blind leadership. Heads should roll and true visionaries, who share in the spirit of unity should be put in these commanding positions. So what if they turn up to be black!

For heavens sake why does everything have to be about race. South Africa is as racist as ever because this like this for example are blown out of proportion. Also why should anyone make it into the Springbok team just because they're black, white, pink or blue, you you have to earn you place in the team regardless of colour. Though then again I would expect people to be hired based on their CV not the colour of their skin, so much for that.

I simply cannot believe that this really is an issue. The country is FULL of places like towns, cities, townships, etc. Do you expect the Boks to visit each and every one of those? No? So what makes the Sowetans more important than the rest of the country? I agree it would have been absolutely great for the Boks to visit such a large group of supporters among the black community, but... Seriously people, stop pulling out the "racist" card every time you get half an opportunity. The world isn't against you.
