Mallett chases Samoan hooker

2005-05-18 06:25

Herbert Pretorius

Cape Town - Western Province's director of rugby, Nick Mallett, hopes that a sturdy Samoan will help alleviate Province's dire shortage of top class hookers.

Mallett has disclosed that negotiations are underway with Ace Tiatia with a possibility of offering him a contract.

The hooped jerseys are in dire need of hookers. Hanyani Shimange is in the Bok squad, Pieter Dixon is leaving for England and David Britz is still suspended because he allegedly used a banned substance.

Mallett said Province tried to keep Lukas van Biljon, on loan from the Lions Rugby Union to help the Stormers, but the Lions declined to release him from his contract.

Mallett said: "All the top hookers in South Africa have already signed contracts (including Schalk Brits) and we have to look at an overseas option.

"Tiatia has played for London Harlequins in the English premier league in the last few seasons and was released from his contract recently when the team was relegated.

"The Samoan is big and strong (1.88m and 113kg) for a hooker and he likes carrying the ball. Earlier in his career he was a flanker."

Series of medical tests

Mallett said the plan was to invite the player to South Africa early in June to undergo a series of medical tests.

"I would also like him to train with the Province squad three or four times, because I would like to see his scrumming technique, throws into the lineouts and his attitude."

The 28-year-old Tiatia has worn the Samoan jersey six times and has also played Super 12 rugby for the Highlanders, Crusaders and the Hurricanes.

Mallett is not just looking for players, but also casting his net wide to find top coaches for Province.

Mallett said: "I have a mandate from the union to select a coaching team. We just do not have the time to advertise and conduct interviews.

"I am looking for a coach for the forwards, who can also be the head coach; a coach for the backs who can also give attention to the players' skills; a specialist coach for kicking and a defence consultant.

"Hopefully we will be able to make an announcement on June 1.

"I have Province's contracted players at my disposal and they will be undergoing medical tests as well as skills and defence training this week."

He said the results of the first medical tests contained bad news, because "it seems as if both Andries Bekker (Stormers' lock) and Shandré Frolick (exciting SA Under-19 fullback) will have to undergo shoulder operations. They could be out of action for up to four months.

"This is really a pity, because I am especially excited about Frolick's potential. I think he can go far."

Mallett said he had held very frank talks with all his contracted players on Monday and harsh words were exchanged.

"I told them individually what I thought of their performances in the Super 12 series, and believe me, I did not dish out a lot of compliments."
