Wellington - Former All Blacks utility back Sosene Anesi broke his neck in a Super 14 rugby match for the Waikato Chiefs on Friday but did not have any paralysis, team officials said on Saturday.
Anesi, who played one test for New Zealand as a replacement against Fiji in 2005, was listed in a stable condition in Hamilton's Waikato Hospital.
He completed the match between the Chiefs and the Wellington Hurricanes, won 39-32 by the Hurricanes, before complaining of neck pain.
Scans revealed fractures of the C6 and C7 vertebrae, said officials.
