White: Plenty of sadness

2007-10-31 13:54

Cape Town - A bitter Jake White has announced that he is to quit as coach of South Africa's World Cup winning rugby team, accusing Springbok bosses of bouncing him out of the job.

White, who has been linked with coaching positions with rival national sides, said he would take the team to Britain next month for matches against Wales and his swansong against the multinational Barbarians on December 1.

"The match against the Barbarians at Twickenham will be my last as Springbok coach," White told reporters at a press conference in Cape Town.

"I walk away with no regrets but plenty of sadness."

White was "extremely disappointed" to have been informed via email that he would not be considered for a new contract after he failed to reapply for his job, claiming that he should not have had to put his hand up, and said he had not been given adequate time to consider his position.

"My contract as Springbok coach is clear, that I was not obliged to apply and that all considerations would be discussed at my annual review (in December when his current deal expires)," he said.

"I did ask for time to consider my options as I was mindful of making a wrong decision based on emotion. This time was not afforded me and that is particularly disappointing."

Four candidates

The 43-year-old, who has been in charge of the national team since 2004, has been in hot demand with the Australian Rugby Union revealing on Tuesday that White's agent had been in touch about the vacant Wallabies post.

He has also been linked to the England and Wales coaching positions.

The South African Rugby Union is understood to be considering four candidates as coach, including former Springbok winger Chester Williams, Pretoria Blue Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer and Pieter de Villiers, who is in charge of the under-21 side.

White had long had a testy relationship with Saru bosses and was summoned back home in the middle of a tour to Britain at the end of last year to explain the team's poor form.

Saru president Oregan Hoskins was quoted in The Star newspaper on Wednesday as saying White was trying to portray himself as a victim even though he had informed board members of his intention to quit some time back.

'Portrayed as the victim'

"Jake was seen as someone who was never prepared to give the whole story and relied on public sentiment after the World Cup to support his cause as a martyr," said Hoskins.

"The unfortunate thing is that Jake is now portrayed as the victim and the council as a bunch of idiots who just did not like him after we won the World Cup.

"But that's just not fair and it's not the whole story as there are a lot of people in SA Rugby who stood by Jake and supported him during some of his darkest moments in the job."

South African President Thabo Mbeki last week said it would be a mistake if White were to be allowed to slip through the hands of the Springboks in their moment of triumph.

"It would be odd that, in the moment of victory, which comes after a long period of preparation, you say, 'Thank you for your services White, goodbye'," Mbeki said in a radio interview.

I have always been a suppporter of Jake white and I am really sad that he is leaving, we as a public should stand up to the mamparas that call them selfs South African Rugby Union and demand that the SA public want a winning combination of white at the lead, these clowns have doomed SA rugby to settle personal scores.
Shekinah 10/31/2007 2:14:22 PM
Nothing to prove Jake to people who have evertything to prove. You are beter off personally, no matter how much you desire to make a difference. It is a steady spiral down when wilfully blind men lead.
Shawn Lynch 10/31/2007 2:14:24 PM
And so starts the long slow downward spiral of South African Rugby. Politicians using the sport to remind everyone about the days they had to carry Pass books and suffered under apartheid. Build a bridge and get over it. Its been more than 10 years now, lets move on.
Fishy 10/31/2007 2:16:52 PM
I think there's more to this story than what Jake is sharing. If he knew that he needed to apply again months ago then why didnt he? Even if one has performed well at a job if your employers says that a certain process will be followed then follow it.
jolene van wyk 10/31/2007 2:19:29 PM
It would be odd that, in the moment of victory, which comes after a long period of preparation, you say, 'Thank you for your services White, goodbye'
Helen Harley 10/31/2007 2:20:09 PM
What a loss to SA Rugby - the powers that be are a bunch of fools!! Good luck Jake....wherever your future in rugby is will be their gain and our huge loss. Thanks too for bringing the cup back home - I will always treasure those happy and proud memories.
CJ 10/31/2007 2:21:35 PM
It's a sad, sad day!!! I'm proud of you Jake, and yes,you have nothing to regret. It's especially sad that after the country has become together, that all the celebrations end this way. Good luck and blessings to you and your family in all your future endeavours. You're walking away as a World Champion!!!! - CJ
Gerard Walsh 10/31/2007 2:21:50 PM
To say that the council did just did not like him after we won the world cup is ludicrous - it is quite clear from history that the council never liked him and are now trying to play the good guys. They are fooling no-one!
Thomas 10/31/2007 2:23:06 PM
Jake, thank you for your part in bringing back the World cup. In the position you were in, using public sentiment is part of the survival training, SARU and Hoskins can soil the cup now by sticking it wherever they choose, but they shouldn't get to comfortable with it, 4 years is not as long as they think. As for Thabo, he is only too pleased to see you go, he can put another comrade under his thumb into your spot despite what he says on radio.
JapieDownUnder 10/31/2007 2:23:44 PM
No Mr Hoskins, you are not just portrayed as idiots - you are a bunch of idiots! What a way to ruin the post RWC party!
Jeff Fensham 10/31/2007 2:24:21 PM
Jake our mentor, you are at the top of your game. Get out of SA Rugby quickly, out of the polotics, the two sided management, the quota set up,it will all come back once the glory is over.Australia want`s you china
K 10/31/2007 2:24:32 PM
Do you really blame Jake for quitting? It is a wonder that he has stayed so long. There are just too many politics in rugby and he would not have enjoyed his position. He is not the type of person to sit back and take it... Even our President is behind him but SA Rugby is not Well done to Jake for leading the boks to victory and I wish him all the best for the future!
G 10/31/2007 2:25:00 PM
Oregan Hoskins is the leading fool of a bunch of idiots known as SARU. I am glad you were kicked in the sweets by Debora last night. Are you using this stint to help lick your wounds?? What a joke...
Sir Garfield Sober 10/31/2007 2:25:14 PM
Watched the interview withe Deborah Phatter, Hoskins and White. Oregen couldn't even answer any of the questions properly, he kept trying to dodge the truth. The whole Saru administration needs to merge with SAFA and take the two top sports in this country to hell with themselves
Woza2011 10/31/2007 2:26:15 PM
Jake proved that he won't pick players he doesn't like. Sure it worked but SA has a huge pool of talent and I feel a more open-minded coach is needed. Yes he won us THE cup but Heyneke Meyer has won many more cups than Jake (with a Bulls team that picks black players regularly). I don't want Jake to go but for the Boks to transform from a lily white team to one that wins with more than 2 players of colour we need someone new.
Fay 10/31/2007 2:26:21 PM
Jake got thanks for no thanks - this has just put such a black blanket over what we were all rejoicing about ! I wish Jake all the best and you all watch he will be snapped up by international teams as coach - SA you have won the cup but you have lost the greatest coach !!
Leonard Musetsho 10/31/2007 2:26:59 PM
I think its good for him to move on whilst still appreciated by the fans unlike we are the ones who's pushing him like is the case in soccer.
JeanV 10/31/2007 2:27:01 PM
Unbelievable!
Mark 10/31/2007 2:27:30 PM
Good luck Jake, God Bless. Gonna miss you!!!
Danie 10/31/2007 2:27:32 PM
If it's correct what Jake has said: My contract as Springbok coach is clear, that I was not obliged to apply and that all considerations would be discussed at my annual review (in December when his current deal expires). Then it doesn't matter what is said or implied. Read the contract and follow it!! As per usual the powers that be have two left feet and ugly shoes. (with apology to Erin Brockovich) Best of luck where ever you go Jake, and thank you for the world cup!
dries 10/31/2007 2:27:38 PM
The council, including Hoskins, a bunch of idiots. That sounds about right to me.
jeremy 10/31/2007 2:28:31 PM
It looks to me as though Saru didn't want to ASK Jake to stay, as that would have allowed him to name his own price. Hence their insistence on Jake re-applying for his post. Personally I think Saru have behaved appallingly in this matter. They should have paid Jake whatever he asked for...after all he's the best in the world right now.
Christo 10/31/2007 2:29:15 PM
...the short road to mediocrity. Letting a WC winning rugby coach quit, because of, among other things, his lack of transformation??? Madness. SARU must just realise that they are shooting themselves in the foot. The standard of SA rugby will go down, interest will wane, and no one will watch rugby anymore. Cheers big bonuses and salaries (for SARU) and R.I.P. our beloved Springbok. ?Nag ou grote?.
Mike 10/31/2007 2:29:35 PM
It is confirmed for the world to see. The rugby bosses are the biggest - despotic - brainless fat cats on planet earth. Well done, you got what you wanted Stofile, Kompela and co. Take what is good and destroy - the story of our continent in the name of ideology!
Sharon 10/31/2007 2:29:59 PM
What a joke the SARU is? This is typical of how South Africa views people who will go the extra mile for our sporting personalities. Examples are Kevin Peterson who we continue to bad mouth when we play against him. When will we learn to look after our players. Didn't we do the same thing to the 95 World Cup team - Francois Pienaar and team? Disgusting! I hope that he goes on to win the next World cup against us for whatever country he goes to coach. Good luck, Jake white - you deserve it!
SL 10/31/2007 2:31:03 PM
This is NOT how Jake should be treated after all he has done for SA Rugby - he should at least have been given the chance to consider his options - he has been rather busy the last two months - in case the SARU has'nt noticed!! Disgusting!!
benny 10/31/2007 2:31:05 PM
Typical of South African sport! Can't and will not give credit where credit is due! We like being champions but when we are we try give the cup back without rtying our best to hold on to it. Change should take place at the bottom (grass rooots/club) level and not top level.
Barry 10/31/2007 2:31:51 PM
"The unfortunate thing is that Jake is now portrayed as the victim and the council as a bunch of idiots who just did not like him after we won the World Cup." [Oregan Hoskins] He could not put it better - "bunch of idiots" that what they are...... We will miss you Jake and these bunch of idiots will regret it....
Mp3's mentor 10/31/2007 2:31:58 PM
Hoskins is always a big mouth when he doesnt hav a camera in his face. I saw him on 3rd degree when debora tor him a new one about the treatment of jake white and he denied everything. Hoskins u are dog with no character nor dignity. U cant even keep to your word as signed in a contract which shows wat a scumbag u are. Jake go well and thanks for everythin. Coach a team that will kick the SA quota side's ass.. Congrats saru u got wat u wanted at the expense of the fans as always.. Bastards
Jonathan 10/31/2007 2:33:44 PM
How crazy it is and what a sad reflection on SA Rugby that they have done nothing to keep a coach who has just guided us to the pinnacle of world rugby! Can they not see what idiots they are!? It is blatantly obvious - we won the world cup BECAUSE of Jake White - yet political vendetta's appear to have top priority in this country, nevermind how competitive we are!
Boris Berovic 10/31/2007 2:33:56 PM
I salute and bow to the greatness of Mr. White and his warrioirs as "We did conquour". You are the respectful leader of South African rugby proven by the battles on the field. May the fairy-unfairy fairys help Mr. Oregan Hoskins and his executives in building a new generation of rugby heroes. Mr. Hoskins "Can you conqour, tomorrow, in four years, ever?"
Chris 10/31/2007 2:34:14 PM
All I can say is, god speed Jake, I for one appreciated you, may you find more happiness and appreciating to where you go to.
Martin 10/31/2007 2:35:01 PM
Sign of things to come!
Big Willy 10/31/2007 2:35:23 PM
How does the saying go? "One step forward, two steps back?" Seems just like in soccer and cricket the administrator screw with the formula. Some day they'll learn that they're ADMINISTRATORS not COACHES/PLAYERS! This is a sad sad day. As John Robbie would say, "Mark me down as disappointed!"
Andre 10/31/2007 2:36:56 PM
So all ends as expected. The dinosaurs remain in power and protect their cushy little jobs, not interested in results. Before the WC started I said "enjoy the rugby while you can". Well done Jake, you were a blessing to this country, I'll support your next team. "The operation was a huge success, pity the patient now has to die"! Now the next guy will stuff up in time, ploughing with Jake's oxen until all is gone.
andrew 10/31/2007 2:39:31 PM
it's no surprise to read this. The presidents council as with many sports administrators are meant to serve the game and the people that play it. Instead they end up serving their own selfish interests (like the R70million payout to SAFA 'servants'). I reckon Mike Stofile is genuinely bleak that we won RWC because he made it very clear that he did not support Jake or John Smit and a victory to SA makes him look very stupid. I wish we could vote these self serving presidents out.
Wesley 10/31/2007 2:39:36 PM
Politics and sport are a deadly combo, and needless to say SARU is politics. We going to loose white to another team, and there will be lots of regret in the future when SA see what SA are up against.
Tebogo 10/31/2007 2:40:04 PM
Jake White has to be dissapointed. How could he have to re-apply for the job while the whole focus was on the World Cup. His sacking will bring about a huge drop in morale for team particularly for the coming British tour. HE WAS SET UP. I thought this happens only in PSL soccer clubs but i'm shocked to see this happening in rugby.
Richard Bradshaw 10/31/2007 2:40:53 PM
It is sad when the ruling party gets involved in sports in this country.Without Jake White we will not win a world cup for the next 30 odd years. Thanks to the gov for the quota system, I think it is great,But it must come with merit.
Jason 10/31/2007 2:44:04 PM
Oregan Hoskins, what are you doing? or is someone else pulling your strings like a spineless puppet. OR are you just an IDIOT?
Justin 10/31/2007 2:44:06 PM
Oregan Hoskins is the worst thing that has ever happened to SA rugby a personally feel that he should be axed and replaced so SA rugby can move forward
Graham 10/31/2007 2:44:20 PM
The tradgedy of all of this saga is that Oregan Hoskins has continued in the same vain as Brian van Rooyen. The SARU committee sees itself all powerful, make knee jerk decisions, I mean whats with summonsing Jake back from overseas to discuss team performance while he undertaking a tour. Noticed that all his detractors who threatened him basked in the glory of the Springbok's winning and made to most of ensuring their exposure
Jake-fan 10/31/2007 2:44:39 PM
This is it! A new rugby fan and an even quicker loss of one. Saru is a bunch of simple minded idiots as far as I am concerned. And President idiots have made his stupidity very clear on more than one occasion, especially in interviews on 702 with John Robbie. Oregon Hoskins, you and your idiot friends are the biggest bunch of arsholes in the whole world. This is a national disgrace! I am certainly not a proud South African if this is what South Africans are.
Zee 10/31/2007 2:45:04 PM
Thank you for everything you have done for Springbok rugby, as well as South Africa as a nation. To have the elation and joy and unity of winning the world cup erased by the illogical decision-making of an incompetant rugby executive body is just sad. No one can blame you, for you have been through a lot to build this winning team and to have it destroyed for seemingly idiotic reasons would have made me leave a lot earlier. Thanks once again! ps. Please don't go to Australia :(
Josh 10/31/2007 2:45:22 PM
The SARU council isn't being portrayed as a bunch of idiots. YOU ARE A BUNCH OF IDIOTS! What a slap in the face for Jake to make him reapply for his job DURING the world cup.
Yorsie 10/31/2007 2:45:45 PM
It was so hard to get to the top for Jake, but staying at the top is even harder. That is why SARU bosses are letting him go. Jake was hard and successful, now it is time for transformation, softies anf failure, like everywhere else in africa.
Vuyo 10/31/2007 2:46:12 PM
Sickening I tell you! SARU is just sick in the head! How could they let Jake Go????? We are the only country who let the winning coach go!!!!! Other coaches resign or were fired after losing from the World CUP!
AntiBok 10/31/2007 2:46:39 PM
Why must we fool ourselves, Jake and his team had an easy road to the final. Deep down he knows if he had to meet the All Blacks, Australia or France in the quarters or semi's, his lilly white team probably would not have played the finals. So, why must we beg him. He hide behind Debra on 3rd degree last night to point fingers at SARFU. And even Debra herself has shown us her true colours. Maybe now we will se more pontentional black players making it in WC rugby. We will not miss you!
A DJ 10/31/2007 2:48:06 PM
You are a bunch of idiot's.... when I see transformation at grass root levels I MIGHT reconsider my views, but that is unlikely to happen, please prove me wrong. In the meantime, hamba kahle Jake, you can certainly walk away as a true and proud South African...
Remember the Springbok 10/31/2007 2:48:35 PM
Hoskins took a beating last night from that lady on 3rd Degree on E Tv. I liked it when she said " You suits are now joining in the RWC glory but you wanted to fire Jake before RWC" on which he struggled to find words. She showed him and SARU for who they really are. White is going to come back and bite us in 2011. If I was White I would also leave - get out of this politics mess while on a high.
Dineo 10/31/2007 2:48:57 PM
South Africans does not know what they want i am also dissapointed by Jake White's decission to quit but the poor man had no choice. Our country does not practice the proudly South African logo if you look at how much they are paying Bafana Bafana coach i believe Jake was treated unfairly and our president was correct when he said "It would be odd that, in the moment of victory, which comes after a long period of preparation, you say, 'Thank you for your services White, goodbye',"
nelson 10/31/2007 2:49:08 PM
it is very dispointing for saru to let the coach slip in their hands what kind of a coach do you want if can let the winning coach slip.i am a concerned south african.
Ryan 10/31/2007 4:34:14 PM
SARU has finally done it. They've made one of the biggest mistakes they could (and looking at their past record, this is a major thing for them, because they only seem to make mistakes). They have alienated people to the team, and they have made a nation and a team furious. Jake White is the best coach in the country - the past 4 years and this year's RWC has proved it. One can only conclude that the SARU managers have a collective IQ of 20.
Frikman 10/31/2007 4:35:12 PM
Jake you should send them a Polaroid of the Web Ellis Cup and mail it to them as your CV with the caption on the back: "The Rugby World Cup... heard of it?" Farewell great coach. Farewell Springbok Rugby.
brian 10/31/2007 4:35:30 PM
If anybody should go it is the saru board. They are the ones who should have to reapply for their positions and should be voted in by the general public. What a bunch of idiot's.Good luck Jake and thanks for all you have done for S.A. and the Springboks.
Pierre 10/31/2007 4:35:46 PM
Good luck to you Jake White, you've helped to make us as a country so proud in this dark hour. Now we'll just have to sit back and see what the outcome of SA Rugby's future is. Hey, at least we'll always have Paris.
Wayne 10/31/2007 4:43:05 PM
Hey Antibok, let me guess, are you one of the rugby administrators or just a complete moron? You choose! Same diffs in my opinion
Elmarie 10/31/2007 4:59:54 PM
Jake, all of the best to you and your family. You have made the only decision. Now it is just to decide who will be the lucky ones to receive our best... Thank you for your great service to a proud but SAD nation. We stand amazed at the idiots behind this - WHAT DID WE REALLY EXPECT? Nothing more and nothing less.
Joe 10/31/2007 5:03:35 PM
Merit is what it should be about, however it is now about colour as is everything else in this country. SA rugby will die a painful death as did our all black soccer team. Many of us will no longer support SA rugby, but support whatever country Jakes heads up. Extremely dissapointed.
Eric 10/31/2007 5:07:43 PM
The transition to professionalism in rugby has seen coaches and players radically improving playing performance. Their success is seen in the increasing international mobility and demand for elite skills. Unfortunately in general, the administrators of rugby have not demonstrated the same commitment to professionalism. The logical end point is a professional game like gridiron football. Commercial teams insulated from politics and unprofessional administrators. I predict that in the not too distant future, the best rugby teams will not be representing countries; it will be the best commercial franchise. This means that competitions will field the best teams from a global talent pool. The demise of the rugby administrator as we know them now cannot come too soon.
No-name 10/31/2007 5:08:49 PM
No doubt u guys are black and cant handle watching whites playing excellent rugby. Then u use ur racist excuses that transformation needs to take place. U are the pure definition of mediocrity. U'd rather see ur black brothers stuffing everythin up than be a winning country. Thats why blacks will always be losers. Its their huge inferiority complexes that blind them from the truth. The hypocricy of the masses who always shout racism when they are the biggest racists of all. In africa a white man always has to be discriminated against so the blacks can get ahead without ever workin for it. Self entitlement seems to be ingrained in ur thick skulls
Werner 10/31/2007 5:09:19 PM
having been present at twickenham on that dark day in 2003 when our best were humiliated 53-3 by England, I never thought we'd be good enough again . Enter Jake White, ever since his name was even mentioned in the same breath with Springbok coach he's met controversy, strife, sabotage, political involvement at every corner. How he stuck it out for 4 years, through all the trauma that constitutes being coach, is incredible. You did it your way JW,let these clowns run their own circus/gov/SARU.Suckers!
ARNOLD 10/31/2007 5:12:08 PM
With Jake remaining I have no doubt our boys would have become the greatest Springboks ever. Things happen in three's as the saying goes. The first is that Jake has now gone. The second will be that none of our players playing overseas will be permitted to play for the Boks.(I can see it coming as clear as daylight) The third will be the removal of the Springbok emblem and title from our rugby playing nation. What a sad day indeed.
Mervyn 10/31/2007 5:12:59 PM
Hoskins' criticism of White (a national hero) underscores his lack of leadership. He should be sacked as president of Saru.
idiot nation 10/31/2007 5:16:12 PM
It really is hilarious. We win the World Cup,we are the World Champions, against ALL odds.Nr1 in the world, coach, team, player of the year, our enemies(NZ/Fra/Eng/Aus) in complete demoralised disarray, we finally have the opportunity to restore our rugby heritage over an extended period of time(not just a few flashes here and there),and what happens?Sack the coach first thing.Really hilarious.Must be cos he's White.Any takers on JW winning again in 4years,this time with Aus,pulling an Eddie Jones?
