Johannesburg - The Springboks may have lost their Os, but they'll soon be getting a (genuine) cow.
The Xhosa royal family said on Sunday that the Bok squad had accepted an invitation to a feast at Nqadu, near Willowvale in the Eastern Cape, to celebrate their rugby World Cup victory.
Zolani Mkiva, spokesperson for the royal family, said although there would not be the traditional ritual ox-slaughtering ceremony the king would present a gift of a cow to the Boks, at the feast.
The Bok legend Os (Ox) du Randt retired after the final.
Mkiva said the Boks could decide "if they wanted to slaughter the cow on the spot, or take her back home alive".
Shortly after the Boks had beaten England in the final, the royal family had invited them to celebrate their victory with "dance, music and poetry".
Mkiva said "a few oxen" would be slaughtered before the arrival of the Springboks, so that the meat could be eaten at the feast.
He said the royal family's deputation would meet SA Rugby this week, to finalise arrangements.
Mkiva said the ideal would be for the entire team to be at the occasion, but "we know that some of the players have already left for overseas, to go and play for new teams".
Rayaan Adriaanse, media manager of SA Rugby confirmed that there would be a meeting this week with the royal house.
Plans had not yet been finalised and it was not clear which players and management members would be able to attend the festivities.
