Stellenbosch - Western Province and Stormers rugby player Schalk Ferreira got out of his crumpled sports car with only minor injuries after a collision with a truck here on Monday morning.
The powerful prop forward, whose Audi A3 Sportback was written off, later said he was concerned about a possible neck injury and the effects it may have on his season.
He had recently recovered from neck problems and his neck was still sore on Monday afternoon.
Ferreira will be examined by the Stormers' team doctor on Tuesday but it is unlikely that he will be able to train with the rest of the squad.
Senior Stellenbosch traffic officer Jacques Johannes said the accident had occurred at 08:10 on the R304 near Kyamandi outside Stellenbosch.
It seems Ferreira was in process of overtaking a bakkie but lost control of his sponsored car.
The driver of a truck going in the opposite direction swerved to avoid the spinning car but his vehicle hit the Audi on the passenger's side.
The truck came to a standstill in the middle of the road and Ferreira's car ended up in a ditch.
"I am blessed that I was not injured," the player said later. He was still shocked but had no injuries apart from "a few cuts and abrasions".
"I was very lucky that I was able to get out. The car is "totalled," he said.
Had there been any passengers in the car, it could have been a fatal accident, he added.
The truck driver, who was alone in his vehicle, was not injured.
Ferreira was taken to the Stellenbosch MediClinic and later discharged.
