Saru divided on new Bok coach
08/01/2008 22:50  - (SA)

Cape Town - A vote was required in order to decide on the candidate to succeed Jake White as Springbok coach.

The special committee entrusted with determining the most suitable candidate to take over the reigns as Bok coach was divided, with Heyneke Meyer and Peter de Villiers both receiving support.

Eventually, after the vote, a name was agreed upon which will be presented to Saru's presidents' council.

The presidents' council will gather on Wednesday morning to give their final stamp of approval and Saru president Oregan Hoskins has scheduled a news conference for 13:00.

Meyer on Tuesday received the support of South Africa's top players, but it remains to be seen whether this support is shared by the top brass.

Meanwhile, rugby365.com's Jan de Koning reports that South Africa's senior players have voted overwhelmingly in favour of Meyer as the next Springbok coach.

Meyer received 198 out of 258 votes from the members of the South African Players Union (Sarpa).

Interviews with the four short-listed candidates to succeed Jake White as national coach - Heyneke Meyer, Peter de Villiers, Allister Coetzee and Chester Williams - were concluded on Tuesday.

The four candidates were interviewed by a special committee, under the chairmanship of South African Rugby Union deputy president Mike Stofile. The committee will make their recommendation to Saru's presidents' council.

The results of the poll, conducted among more than 300 of the country's top players, were handed to Stofile on Tuesday, although it is uncertain what bearing it will have on the committee's recommendation.

    Favourite

Piet Heymans, the chief executive of Sarpa, confirmed that Meyer was the overwhelming favourite among the country's players.

A similar poll was conducted among the players ahead of White's appointment in 2004 - with the Rugby World Cup-winning coach also a favourite at the time.

"It is pretty clear who the players want as coach," Heymans said.

He revealed that SMS's were sent to 333 of their members and received 258 responses.

    The results were:

    Heyneke Meyer - 198
    Peter de Villiers - 36
    Allister Coetzee - 18
    Chester Williams - 4

    There were two spoilt votes.

Heymans added that he hoped the committee and the presidents' council would take note of the players' wishes, even though Sarpa had no formal representation on the council.

"These players have all played under most of these coaches and should know who the best candidates are. There is good value in listening to their opinions," Heymans said, adding that the poll was a "very valuable" exercise.

    Disappointed

The Sarpa boss expressed his disappointment that players still did not have a formal say in the appointment of the new Springbok coach.

"I feel a little disappointed that the players have not formally been included in the process," Heymans said.

Heymans, who is a member of the Saru board but does not have any input in presidents' council matters, also expressed hope that players would have a notable say in all future structures in SA rugby.

  • Who should be Bok coach?

      New Bok Coach
    09/01/2008 06:24
SARU should learn from Whites career path, & consider more seriously the role of U19, U21 & U23 Bok coaches- as candidates should primarily come from here-based on performance etc- The key factor being coaches from here, should have pulse of the next generation of Boks, & without any provisionalism baggage. Ex-Bok players don't necessarily make good Bok coaches. Good luck to the next victim- Jakes performance will be difficult to emulate - Pete

      Give players a chance
    09/01/2008 06:53
my opinion is that the players should also be involved in choosing the coach. Their choice should also be considered.Although the presidents' council will have the last say. Good luck Meyer - settie

      Bok coach
    09/01/2008 07:37
Of course it must be Heyneke. I think Dick Muir is even better but being a Sharks fan I am glad we have him for another year.(hopefully). Players should have a big say. - Roger dodge

This is South Africa, I doubt the skill of the intended coach is top priority in the minds of the clowns running the three ring circus. - The fisherman

      voting by senior players
    09/01/2008 07:56
please..... why obtain votes from senior players. The votes should have come through from the younger ranks. These are the players that should be pushed through into the springbok ranks. - D

      Good
    09/01/2008 08:05
Thats right choose Meyer and when the boks crash during the Tri-Nations Allister and Peter will still look good. I do not think that it is a surprise that the majority of the senior players is white and would choose Meyer. - Realist2

"i hope the new coach will pass"
    09/01/2008 08:06
lets just forget about transformation in the rugby and focus on how we as south africans can help the saru commitee keep their promise and fail to succeed in making rugby a better sport for all south africans to fell free in succeeding... - LGK

      De Villiers - next coach
    09/01/2008 08:06
It is sad that De Villiers achievements at the junior level are being ignored just because he does not have a white skin colour. Jacke himself worked under De Villiers at the junior level of the game but to date he is still ignored and not respected for his contribution to rugby in this country. I believe if De Villiers had a white skin colour he would have been the obvious choice as next bok coach. Rugby needs change to be all inclusive and if this is the change SA Rugby wants they will select De Villiers. De Villiers will make sure that the young black rugby stars do not get lost and ignored when it comes to selection and he will ensure that they do get a fare change to reach the highest level of the game which is Jake did not do. - colin

players should be considerd when chossing a coach because they know better than the commitee and who is suitable for job - Charmaine

      Skewed Representivivity
    09/01/2008 08:33
90% of the SARPA players are white and the majority of these are Afrikaans. It is therefore no surprise why Heyneke Meyer received the most votes. - The Nutty Professor

      More of the same
    09/01/2008 08:39
Most of these players are white and Afrikaans, so they would vote for Meyer, wouldn't they? Why would they want to rock the boat - business as usual, with the Big White Chief in charge! - Henri Fortuin

      Coach!
    09/01/2008 09:20
Jake White period with the boks was phenomanal, and under-rated by our adminstration. Good Luck to both, as our admin get too involved with political Jargon and focus on political figures happiness instead of focussing on the game at hand. Both candidates have the pedigree to be successfull! One concern is this word "Transformation" where Admin focus on Springbok rugby, when it should start at School and Club level. That is where everybody loses the plot.Lets not lose our current players. - DZ

      The Players have spoken
    09/01/2008 09:52
I think it's quiet clear who is leading the Boks to the World Cup. Meyer is the name!!!! Though De Villiers was my fav, Meyer's good too. But lets just wait till 13: 00 for the final. - Thabo

"i hope the new coach will pass"
    09/01/2008 09:53
its best is we have a black coach for transformation in rugby, because i think thats what the saru committee wants and will enjoy... - LGK

      Jake's the BEST example
    09/01/2008 10:14
I have to agree with Collin. I cant help seeing it as B*S that De Villiers is not the obvious choice. When u look at Jake,he didnt come in with Super 14 or much Curie Cup success. Thats not what it takes to succeed at International Level! De Velliers KNOWS what it takes. What a mess. Give the man a chance. Heyneke can take a sabatical :-) - Papa Boachie-Yiadom
