Lawrence 'opens' Super 14

Johannesburg - Five of South Africa's top six referees will officiate in the first
round of the Super 14 on February 15 and 16, with experienced South
African Test referee Mark Lawrence handling the very first match of the
2008 series between Crusaders and the Brumbies in Christchurch on
January 15.
The officials for only the first six weeks of the competition have
been announced.
World Cup referee Marius Jonker is the second of three South
Africans who will officiate overseas in the first-round in the match
between a New Zealand and Australian franchise, namely the Reds and the
Highlanders in Brisbane.
Craig Joubert, who last year spent a long
period overseas to cut down on his travel to the Antipodes, referees in
the clash between the Waratahs and the Hurricanes in Sydney.
In all three the above matches, there will be a South African touch
judge. Phillip Bosch, Pro Legoete and Joey Salmans will run touch for
Lawrence, Jonker and Joubert respectively.
Willie Roos will be in charge of the derby between the Bulls and the
Stormers at Newlands on Saturday, February 16, while Jonathan Kaplan
will officiate in a near-replay of the Currie Cup final when the Lions
play the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
JC Fortuin gets his first Super 14 opportunity of the season on
March 1 in the match between the Highlanders and Waratahs in Dunedin,
and officiates in the Northern derby between the Bulls and the Lions
the following Friday night at Loftus.
