Springbok manager 'not ideal'
20/01/2008 12:07 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Former Springbok captain Corne Krige has called on SA Rugby to get rid of Springbok manager Zola Yeye as he is not an asset to the national team.
Krige, writing in his Losgemaal (loose maul) column in the Afrikaans tabloid Sondag, said that Yeye was not the ideal manager for the Springboks.
"If he gets appointed again, I will give birth to seven baby monkeys," he writes.
Instead he suggests a team manager of stature, such as Laureus patron Morne du Plessis who was the successful team manager in 1995.
Yeye is widely regarded as a political appointment, and has been known for gaffes in press conferences, such as welcoming journalists to Scotland in 2006 when the team had arrived in Ireland.
Krige also believes that new coach Peter De Villiers would be doing the right thing if he retained Gert Smal as forwards coach of the national team.
The former assistant coach was with Jake White when the team won the World Cup last year and Krige believes that he is the right man to go forward.
"Gert is one of the most comprehensive coaches that I know. His work ethic and knowledge of forward play is unbelievable," Krige writes.
"The players respect him. If Peter wants to change as little as possible, then he should choose Gert. However, writes Krige, "if he wants change, then my suggestion would be Naka Drotske and Rassie Erasmus".
Drotske coaches the Currie Cup champions, the Cheetahs, while Erasmus is entering his first year as Stormers coach.
