Crusaders sound early warning

  • Bookies back Crusaders, Bulls
  • Super 14 laws to suit Sharks
  • Fixtures: 2008 Super 14
  • Christchurch - It's early days yet, but six-time Super winners Crusaders were close to awesome in the last quarter as they ran in nine tries in demolishing the Hurricanes 55-33 in a warm-up match for the Super 14 competition in Motueka on Friday.

The match produced 14 tries in all and the usual fervour and uncompromising defence may not have been there throughout on both sides, but there was nothing wrong with the commitment.

The final quarter, in particular, saw some gruelling rugby as Crusaders fought back from a 12-21 deficit at the break. The Hurricanes were still two points ahead with only 25 minutes remaining when Crusaders put in that extra bit - due in no uncertain manner to their superior fitness levels.

Crusaders looked just about ready for their first match in the Super 14 competition in two weeks time, when they play the Brumbies in Christchurch.

    Scorers:

Crusaders: Tries Nasi Manu (2), Steve Alfeld, Hamish Gard, Leon MacDonald, Mose Tuiali'i, Kahn Fotuali'i, Kade Poki, Scott Hamilton; Conversions: Stephen Brett (3), Hamilton, Gard.

Hurricanes: Tries: Zac Guildford (2), Jimmy Gopperth, Thomas Waldrom (2); Conversions: Gopperth (3), Willie Ripia.
