British Lions ticket shortage?
29/01/2008 12:59 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The purchase of a 2008 season ticket at Ellis Park is probably the only way to make sure of a ticket to see the British and Irish Lions play a Test as well as the Lions at the stadium in 2009.
That, in short, is the solution the Lions have come up with to accommodate their regular supporters for the touring Lions matches.
The British and Irish Lions will be followed by an expected 50 000 supporters from the UK, and although Ellis Park is one of the biggest in the country, the demand for tickets is bigger than the availability.
Block bookings in South African hotels as well as B&B's from UK travel agents on behalf of UK Rugby fans are already well under way. There simply will not be enough seats for all the UK visitors and the South African supporters at Ellis Park - or, for that matter, other South African stadiums.
To counter the problem, the Lions have decided that Ellis Park season ticket holders for 2008 will have right of first refusal on the 2009 season tickets which will include a British and Irish Lions Test ticket. Furthermore, season ticket holders will be given the first chance to purchase an additional ticket to the Test at Ellis Park.
This year, the Golden Lions also host the Australia Tri-Nations Test as well as all the Lions Super 14 and Currie Cup home matches. The price for 2008's season tickets starts at R900, while the 2009 prices will be released later in the year.
