Surprises in SA Under-20 squad
30/01/2008 12:31  - (SA)

  • Michalak starts for Sharks
  • 'Australian rugby in trouble'
  • US, All Blacks ink deal
  • Johannesburg - South African Under-20 coach, Eric Sauls, sprung a few surprises in his final training group of 38 for the Under-20 World Championships in Wales in June, with the omission of Bulls Super 14 squad scrumhalf Francois Hougaard, possibly the greatest shock of all.

Hougaard, who joined the Bulls from the Boland this year, is a favourite to make the Super 14 champion's final squad as one of the three scrumhalves along with Springbok and captain Fourie du Preez and Heini Adams, who is back from injury.

The group, which contains 13 Blue Bulls, will be cut back after the next training camp to be held in Saldanha from February 2-11, during which time another set of trials will be held.

Other glaring omissions from the group of 38 are Marnus Schoeman, Francois Brummer, Frik Kirsten and Coenie van Wyk.

    Under-20 squad:

Blue Bulls: Gerrit-Jan van Velze, Berend Botha, Cornell Hess, Divan Kotze, Henri Bantjes, Stefan Watermeyer, Wynand Willis, Gerhard van der Merwe, Stephan Dippenaar, Oscar Mfundise, Tom Seabela, Marnitz Boshoff, Corne Fourie.

    Boland: Dewaldt Duvenhage .

Cheetahs: Herzon Amell, Robert Ebersohn, Cameron Jacobs, Wilton Peterson, Pieter-Willem van Vuuren, Earl-Jivan Snyman.

Lions: Bernardo Botha, Justin Wheeler, Johan van Deventer.

    Leopards: Robert Kruger, BG Uys.

Sharks: Mlindazwe Nqoro, Sabelo Nhlapo, Thiphatu Marole, Wiehahn Herbst, Maphelo Mpondo.

Western Province: Jean-Jacques Rossouw, Lisle Clark, Martin Muller, Mathew Turner, Mzwanele Zito, Yaasir Hartzenberg, Clark Weidemann, Clayton Steward.
