New IRB chapter for Jake White?
01/02/2008 12:31 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Former Springbok coach Jake White has found himself in familiar territory on Thursday night - on a plane to London on rugby business.
According to SuperSport's Dan Retief, White flew to England primarily to promote his best-selling biography In Black and White but with a secondary mission to make contact with a representative of the IRB.
Shortly before departing, White confirmed that he had been in discussions with the IRB about taking up a position that could see him becoming the international body's "coach at large".
"As the year was coming to an end (as the Rugby World Cup Springboks were heading for victory in Paris) I did have discussions with Mike Miller (CEO of the IRB) and Dr Syd Millar (outgoing chairperson) about me having a role in the IRB," said White.
"There is nothing in writing at the moment but the IRB is keen to meet with me with a view to formalising the way I can be involved. I know they are keen and our initial discussions were along the lines of me being deployed with second tier nations. It may be that I get sent to help Spain or Portugal, perhaps even the United States.
"I am going to the UK to launch my book ahead of the start of the Six Nations but I do expect to have a chat with Mark Egan (the IRB's Head of Rugby Services) to see whether something can be worked out which fits in with what I'm doing now."
In that regard White quipped that he was "loving my new life; getting up in the morning and not worrying about whether I still have a job or that I'd been misquoted somewhere and in trouble again!"
