Nod for rugby broadcast deal
01/02/2008 21:41 - (SA)
Johannesburg - SA Rugby and commercial broadcaster, SuperSport, announced an initiative on Friday that would go a long way to ensure that South Africa was well positioned to retain its title as world champions for many years to come.
SA Rugby and SuperSport have entered into a multi- million rand broadcast rights transaction.
SA Rugby President, Oregan Hoskins, said: "The agreement that we have concluded with SuperSport means that a significant amount of revenue is available to SA Rugby.
"This will ensure that we have the resources available to develop the game at grassroots level and that the Springboks of the future are able to be developed to realise their full potential and to match the efforts of the 2007 World Champions."
'SABC continues to broadcast SA rugby'
The CEO of SuperSport, Imtiaz Patel, said: "The partnership between SuperSport and SA Rugby has been a mutually beneficial one which has lasted for many years. This latest agreement, at a time when SA Rugby is at the top of the world, has cemented our partnership. We will also use our best endeavours to ensure that the SABC continues to broadcast South African Rugby on Free to Air television."
In terms of the agreement, SuperSport has secured broadcast rights to South African rugby up to 2015, other than to the Vodacom Tri-Nations and Vodacom Super14 tournaments (which it has until 2010 in terms of the so-called Sanzar contract).
