Party snub for seething Hoskins
05/02/2008 11:55 - (SA)
Cape Town - SA Rugby president Oregan Hoskins is seething after his predecessor, Brian van Rooyen, emerged from the shadows to toast Peter de Villiers with some distinguished company at a function to honour the new Springbok coach.
According to the Cape Times, the R200 000 function in honour of De Villiers, hosted by the Paarl Municipality on Friday, was a slap in the face for Hoskins, who was not invited. Now he is demanding to know why.
Van Rooyen, who was banned from rugby for life after being ousted by Hoskins in 2006, sat at the VIP table where he toasted De Villiers along with the Minister of Sport, Makhenkesi Stofile, co-opted presidents' council member Cheeky Watson, former Springbok team manager Arthrob Petersen, former SA Rugby managing director Rian Oberholzer, Hoskins's presidential rival Mike Stofile and Saru chief executive Johan Prinsloo.
Saru vice-president Koos Basson and SA Rugby managing director Jonathan Stones were also not invited.
It was the first time in almost two years that Van Rooyen had attended a major rugby function. He refused to attend a judicial commission of inquiry into his rugby affairs, labelling it a "kangaroo court" before being convicted in absentia for poor corporate governance and banned in 2006.
Hoskins made several calls over the weekend demanding to know why he had not been invited, and who had been responsible for Van Rooyen making the guest list.
