ANC applauds Springboks

  • Johannesburg - The African National Congress congratulated the Springboks on Tuesday for winning the Laureus World Team of the Year award.

The ANC said: "With this prestigious award, they have once more shown that South Africa is a force to be reckoned with and that we can take on the best of what the sporting world has to offer and come out on top.

"We join millions of our people in applauding the Springboks for this achievement. They carried with them the dreams and aspirations of the whole country and indeed, did not disappoint us."

The support for the national teams was an indication that sports was a major transformation tool and had the ability to unite the country.

"It is during these events that South Africans from all walks of life put aside their differences and stand united behind our national teams.

"As we move towards the 2010 Soccer World Cup, we call upon our national soccer team to follow in the footsteps of the national rugby team and ensure that the trophy remains in South Africa," the ANC said.
