  • Welkom - The Griffons recorded their first victory of the 2008-season when they defeated the Border Bulldogs by 41-27 in their Vodacom Cup clash at the North West Stadium. The home side led Border 24-17 at the break.

The Griffons lost their first match of the competition by 7-51 against Western Province and needed the victory to get their campaign back on track.

Captain and prop, Sarel Louw, was the best player on the field although all Griffons' forwards deserved a pat on the back for their display.

Johan Pienaar (flank) and AC Vosloo (lock) also merit a mention for their part in the victory.

Great tactical kicking by Cecil Afrika (fullback), Johann van Niekerk (flyhalf) and Bronwyn Gysman (scrumhalf) also played a huge role in securing the win. And it was one of Gysman's placement kicks which was responsible for winger Shane Hancke's try.

The backline of the home team excelled with the amount of ball they received from their pack. They played some exciting, running rugby at times.

For Border, their Springbok flank Solly Tyibilika, and centres Jovan Bowles and Stewart Hudson played well.

    Scorers:

Griffons 41 (24): Tries: Shane Hancke, Juan de Wit, Nicky Pretorius, Johan Pienaar, Gys Briedenhann. Conversions: Johann van Niekerk 5.

    Penalties: Van Niekerk 2.

Border 27 (17): Tries: Ziniko Dumaphi, Jovan Bowles, Solly Tyibilika. Conversions: Stewart Hudson 2, Andisa Gqobo. Penalties: Hudson 2.
