Blue Bulls thump Wildebeest
01/03/2008 22:34 - (SA)
Pretoria - A late Highveld thunderstorm saved the Natal Wildebeest from another embarrassing score when they lost 39-10 to the Blue Bulls in their Vodacom Cup encounter played at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon.
The match was stopped three minutes before the end of the 80 minutes mandatory time but it was irrelevant as the Bulls were streets ahead of their coastal counterparts.
Both sides had made a complete mess of their opening matches last weekend by losing, but this week it was the Blue Bulls who showed that they were able to recover and recover they did.
The opening exchanges were riddled with plenty of collisions with the Blue Bulls gaining an ascendancy which they exploited in the 21st minute when wing Luvuyo Mhlobiso opened the scoring for the hosts.
Four minutes later the Blue Bulls' forwards made sure the scoreboard continued ticking in their favour when Okkie Kruger crashed over.
The Wildebeest though, did not take the Blue Bulls onslaught lying down as they mounted some resistance when Nikolai Blignaut kept his team within reach with a converted try.
By half-time the Blue Bulls had a commanding 25-10 lead and they duly increased it in the 51st minute through a well executed and hard fought Francois Brummer try.
The final nail in the coffin for the Natal boys came in the 62nd minute when Blue Bulls scrumhalf Francois Hougaard crashed over to give his team an almost unattainable 39-10 lead.
The rest of the match was an error riddled affair with the Blue Bulls eager to get more points on the board while the Wildebeest were desperate to make the scoreline more respectable.
In the end the rain and lightening may have had the final say but the Blue Bulls ensured that their campaign was back on track, again.
