  • Johannesburg - SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd on Wednesday "noted with concern" recent media reports about the status of negotiations with new Springbok coach Peter de Villiers, regarding his position as national coach.

SA Rugby said in a statement it agreed that the national coach should have the right to have the final say in the selection of national teams, but that Saru's constitution does not allow for this and the matter is being urgently addressed.

The company issued the following statement:

The Board of SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd will do everything in its powers to ensure that Peter de Villiers has all the support and tools necessary to make him successful in his role as the national coach.

This includes the right to have the final say in the selection of national teams, since this process is linked to his ability to deliver against his agreed performance objectives.

There is a definitive linkage between selection responsibility, and success or failure with regard to performance.

However the Saru constitution requires national teams to be selected by both the coach and the national selectors. This is the constitutional issue that is at the core of the finalisation process.

Whilst the Board is of the opinion that Peter De Villiers should have the final say in the selection process, it cannot grant this without a change to Saru's constitution.

An interim "suspensive" or conditional clause has been proposed to allow the parties to move forward, while this matter is being urgently addressed.
