Assistant Bok coaches finalised
17/03/2008 22:05 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Sharks coach Dick Muir, waiting to hear whether he will be charged for insulting a refereeing official, will know on Tuesday whether he has been appointed as one of new Springbok coach Peter de Villiers' assistant coaches.
Prof Jannie Ferreira, president of the Golden Lions Rugby Union and the man entrusted to lead the process for the appointment of the assistant coaches, said on Monday that the appointments will go ahead on Tuesday, despite the fact that De Villiers' contract with SA Rugby has not been finalised yet.
"The appointment of the assistant coaches is totally separate from the contract of Peter (de Villiers')," he said. "The delay in finalising Peter's contract will not hold up the appointment of the assistant coaches.
"In fact, we hope to finalise the appointments tomorrow (Tuesday)," Ferreira said on Monday.
De Villiers sits on the panel that appoints the assistant coaches.
Muir, it is learnt, is the front-runner for the position as backline coach - and it looks as if former Springbok prop Dawie Theron, who is the forward coach of the Cheetahs and the head coach of Griquas, is favourite to take over from Gert Small as the forward coach. The name of Gary Gold of the Stormers is also mentioned as a possible assistant to De Villiers.
