Cape Town - The two candidates who have been selected as the Springbok team's assistant coaches will not be named before they have been offered contracts by SA Rugby.

Jannie Ferreira, chairperson of the committee tasked to make the appointments, confirmed on Tuesday that the interviews had been completed.

"We have made a decision but I cannot announce the names of the candidates," Ferreira said. "They will be contacted and offered the positions."

Sharks coach Dick Muir and Gary Gold, coach of the Western Province Currie Cup team, are the favourites to be appointed as assistants to Peter de Villiers, who has not signed a contract since being named as Springbok coach in January.

De Villiers was still locked in a contract dispute with SA rugby last week.

Griquas coach Dawie Theron was, along with Gold, a candidate to become coach of the Springbok forwards.

Gold, also an assistant coach with the Stormers in the Super 14 competition, is contracted to WP. He cannot be appointed by SA Rugby without permission from the provincial union.

"Gary has a contract with us until the end of 2009 and it does not contain exit clauses, WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd chief executive Rob Wagner said on Tuesday.

Wagner has informed SA Rugby's managing director, Jonathan Stones, of the situation.

"I have requested that the unions be contacted before SA Rugby make an announcement. Two of the candidates are contracted to unions. Jonathan has promised to convey this to the committee," Wagner said.

If Gold is appointed as assistant coach to the national team the WP board will have to decide whether to release him from his contract.

Compensation to WP will also have to be considered because Gold's knowledge is highly valued.

The administrators at Newlands are well satisfied with his work and he is regarded as a possible successor, in the long term, to Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus. It is therefore uncertain whether he will be released from his contract.
