Lions trampled by Wildebeest
29/03/2008 17:31 - (SA)
Durban - After an enterprising first half in which they were the dominant force, the Wildebeest held their composure in the second half to beat the Young Lions 17-10 at the Absa Stadium in Durban.
But it was a close call to say the least, the Lions fought back strongly in the last 20 minutes to reduce the deficit to seven points after the Wildebeest had led 17-0 at half-time.
The lead probably should have been more than that midway through the second, but with a number of players free at his shoulder Wildebeest fullback Danie Dames opted to have a crack at the line himself and was dispossessed.
It was then that the Young Lions struck with a penalty to flyhalf Arno Coetzee and a wonderful try to wing Edrick van Tonder, converted by Coetzee.
In the first half the Wildebeest were awarded a penalty try as Francois Uys, the Young Lions eighthman, was said to have illegally tackled Wildebeest scrumhalf Scott Mathie.
Flyhalf Tiaan Marx converted but then missed two conversions and a penalty attempt after wing Henno Mentz and then himself had successfully crossed the Young Lions try-line in the first period.
Scorers:
Wildebeest 17 (17): Tries: Penalty Try, Henno Mentz. Tiaan Marx, Conversions: Tiaan Marx (1)
Young Lions 10 (0): Tries: Edrick van Tonder. Conversions: Arno Coetzee (1). Penalties: Arno Coetzee (1).
