Easy win for Bok Sevens
05/04/2008 08:39 - (SA)
Johannesburg - South Africa comfortably won their first pool match in the sixth leg of the IRB World Sevens Series in Adelaide when they defeated the USA
Eagles 43-0 on a day where England were relegated to the Bowl play-offs
after their first two matches.
The Springboks, who impressed with their pace out wide, will be wary of
Canada, who lost 21-14 to Australia with the last act of their match.
The hosts were identified as South Africa's most serious opponents in
Pool C, but on the evidence of their match against Australia Canada
could surprise the Boks - as they've done before.
Fiji first accounted for England (31-12) before Kenya, with a smothering
defence, were good value for their 17-10 win over England in the second
round to ensure that they will be one of the two top sides in Pool D
after their win over France (21-12) in the first round.
South Africa, if they top Pool C, will play the loser of the third-round
match between Fiji and Kenya - and should South Africa finish second
in PoolC they'll face the winner of those two sides.
The Cook Islands came close to surprising Scotland when they led 17-0,
but the more experienced Scots kept their cool to run out 22-17 winners.
In Pool A, Argentina ran an idling New Zealand close, 21-14, although
the Kiwis always seemed to have the game under control. Argentina beat
Scotland in the second round and a count-out between these two sides,
each with one win from two, now seem on the cards - unless of course the
Cook Islands can surprise the South American side or the Scots beat New
Zealand.
