Johnson takes over from Ashton

London - Martin Johnson was named on Wednesday as the new manager of the England team from July 1 following a meeting of the management board of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) here at Twickenham.
Johnson, whose contract runs until December 31, 2011, after the next World Cup in New Zealand, replaced Brian Ashton as head coach despite RFU chief executive Francis Baron saying last week he hoped the 61-year-old could remain in the post.
Johnson, who skippered England to World Cup glory in 2003, will miss England's two Test tour of New Zealand in June because his wife is expecting to give birth to the couple's second child.
Rob Andrew, the RFU's director of elite rugby and the man who recommended Johnson for his new post, will be England's team manager in New Zealand.
Ashton has been offered the post of head coach of England's national academy, a post he has previously held.
