Sarpa could adopt soccer laws
04/05/2008 21:30  - (SA)

  • Springbok lock an April fool?
  • Bakkies: Unbelievable offer
  • Brakes on Bok gravy train
  • Cape Town - The South African Rugby Players Association (Sarpa) are considering adopting soccer's transfer laws in an attempt to ensure that there isn't a repeat of the Bakkies Botha case that is making headlines across the country.

Sarpa confirmed in a report in the Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Sondag that they would be discussing the transfer situation with the South African Rugby Employers Association (Sarea) to ensure that there are firm guidelines when it comes to the transfer of players.

According to the report, Sarpa is looking to adopt the system that where a player wants to transfer in the middle of an existing contract, the transfer fee would include the salary component left on his contract.

Sarpa is hoping that this will help stop European clubs from poaching players in the middle of their contracts with big money offers.

Botha's case has made headlines as he has taken both the Bulls and SA Rugby to the labour court to have his contracts nullified and a release form signed so that he can take up a more lucrative offer from the French club Toulon.
