Scotland pick uncapped trio
07/05/2008 15:24  - (SA)

  • All Blacks to tackle Munster
  • Scotland confirm Test venues
  • Friday first for Six Nations
  • Edinburgh - Scotland have named three uncapped players in an initial 30-man squad for next month's two-Test tour of Argentina.

Edinburgh centre Ben Cairns, 22, is joined by two of Glasgow's brightest prospects, wing Thom Evans and prop Moray Low, both 23, in the squad for what promises to be a tough challenge against the world's 3rd-ranked team.

There is also a recall after a long injury absence for hooker Dougie Hall while two extra backs and three additional forwards will be added to the squad after the final round of Celtic League matches this weekend.

Scotland coach Frank Hadden said his players would relish the prospect of gaining revenge for their 19-13 World Cup quarter-final defeat at the hands of the Pumas last year.

"We are fully aware of the size of the challenge but it's one we're looking forward to," said Hadden. "Argentina have made enormous progress over the last ten years and thoroughly deserved to be ranked third best side in the world.

"We ran them close in the quarter-final of the World Cup and we're fully committed to reversing that result in June."

Mike Blair captains the tour party, continuing in a role he took over from goalkicking back Chris Paterson at the start of the Six Nations campaign earlier this year.

Experience is a precious quality at international level and we will look to Mike and a number of our seasoned professionals to set the tone on this tour," Hadden said.

    The squad:

Scotland squad to face Argentina on June 7 in Rosario and June 14 in Buenos Aires:

Backs: Chris Paterson (Gloucester/ENG), Hugo Southwell (Edinburgh), Simon Danielli (Ulster/IRL), Thom Evans (Glasgow), Ben Cairns (Edinburgh), Graeme Morrison (Glasgow), Andrew Henderson (Glasgow), Nick De Luca (Edinburgh), Dan Parks (Glasgow), Phil Godman (Edinburgh), Rory Lawson (Gloucester), Mike Blair (Edinburgh capt.)

Forwards: Allan Jacobsen (Edinburgh), Alasdair Dickinson (Gloucester/ENG), Ross Ford (Edinburgh), Dougie Hall (Glasgow), Euan Murray (Northampton/ENG), Moray Low (Glasgow), Scott MacLeod (Llanelli/WAL), Dave Callam (Edinburgh), Johnnie Beattie, John Barclay, Kelly Brown (all Glasgow), Allister Hogg (Edinburgh), Alasdair Strokosch (Gloucester/ENG)

Note: Two backs and three forwards to be added to squad later this month
