Cape Town - Formed in 1904, it took Fifa close to three decades to start a professional international competition.
With many top nations withdrawing from the Olympics in 1928, among them Denmark and England, Fifa made a decision to organise a World Cup competition immediately.
Fifa announced its plan to run its own competition, open to all affiliated countries. Initially, a name was not given to the competition, but the world's press did not waste any time giving it their own title. "World Cup", "World Soccer Championship" and "La Coupe de Monde" were a few of the names coined for the competition. Another was the "Jules Rimet Cup".
And so the World Cup was born on May 26 1928.
On May 18 1929 at the congress of Barcelona, Uruguay with its good record in the Olympics tournaments, was proclaimed host of the First World Cup and indeed staged the first world cup.
Sixteen World Cup tournaments have been played between 1930-2002.
