  • Johannesburg - Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla has assured President Thabo Mbeki and a team of Cabinet ministers that work on the province's 2010 Soccer World Cup projects is on track, SABC news reported on Saturday.

Makwetla said he was confident the event would act as a catalyst for economic development.

Mbeki was on a two-day imbizo to the area. He was expected to visit some of the 2010 construction sites later on Saturday, including the Mbombela stadium in Nelspruit where more than 2 000 workers were picketing.

They were demanding nightshift allowance, bonuses and better working conditions.

Workers' spokesperson James Maseko said the protest followed management's refusal to pay them an R800 nightshift allowance, the broadcaster reported.

"We have an agreement in place which says they are supposed to pay us R1 500, now they decide to pay us R500... They say if we don't want to work nightshift then they are going to pay us R500.

"Actually our strike has nothing to do with the visiting of the president."
