No World Cup for Collina
21/06/2005 15:29 - (SA)
Berlin - Italian referee Pierluigi Collina, widely considered the world's top match official, will definitely not be allowed to officiate in the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, a top official said on Tuesday.
Collina will be over the age limit of 45 set by world body Fifa by the time of next year's finals.
"We must abide by the rules," said Volker Roth, the head of the referees' committee for European body Uefa.
Roth admitted that Collina was "something special" but added: "We have so many good referees from all over the world. We'll be able to find a good replacement for Collina."
The bald-headed Italian refereed the 2002 World Cup final in Yokohama, in which Brazil beat Germany 2-0.
